WHAT IS THE RIVIERA MAYA?

Published on June 26, 2017 by Elizabeth Aceves

Playa del Carmen and Riviera Maya
I’ve been living in Playa del Carmen for 7 years now and I realized I never really questioned: What is exactly The Riviera Maya?

After doing some research, I learned that The Riviera Maya is specifically the coastline that stretches from the fishing village of Puerto Morelos and goes all the way down, passing Playa del Carmen, Akumal, Tulum, ending in Sian Ka’ans Biosphere (the world’s second largest barrier reef).

Yes ladies and gentlemen, The Riviera Maya is a beautiful and touristy corridor full of white-sand beaches with turquoise waters, spectacular ruins and breath taking cenotes (natural wells). Everything’s so close that you can explore Tulum’s ruins during the day, and be back to Puerto Morelos or Playa del Carmen by night.

While doing research about The Riviera Maya, I found out that it is, in fact, the fastest growing tourist destination in the world (interesting fact for those of you who are considering investing in a property in this beautiful part of the world.

Now, let’s go to the fun part…

Playa del Carmen and Riviera Maya

WHAT EXACTLY CAN YOU EXPECT TO DO IN THE RIVIERA MAYA?

  • SWIM, SWIM, SWIM!

Swim, snorkel or scuba dive alongside colourful fish, sea turtles, whale sharks, manta rays, and sometimes even dolphins.

  •

  • EXPLORE CENOTES

You can go cave diving or snorkelling the many underground cenotes. You can rent a car to drive to one or several cenotes in one single day, or you can take the colectivo (local transport).

  •

  • GO TO AMUSEMENT PARKS

If your budget allows, you can go to one of the famous amusement parks (Xcaret, Xplor, Xel-Ha). Some of them are All-Inclusive. Our amusement parks are the “eco-friendly” version of Disneyland.

  •

  • OTHER ADVENTURE ACTIVITIES

Why not trying skydiving, zip linning, renting an ATV, go paddle boarding.

  •

  • EXPLORE MAYAN RUINS

You can take a day trip to visit the Mayan ruins in Tulum, Cobá, Chichen-Itzá and even Ek-Balam.

  •

  • GO TO THE BEACH

There are so many breathe taking beaches in this coast line, I promise, there will be no regrets.

  •

  • GO SHOPPING

Yes, for those people who like shopping and are looking for the main brands, you will find some malls in Playa del Carmen, but you can also buy some beautiful souvenirs from our local artisans.

  •

  • EAT!

Mexican cuisine is spectacular (okay, maybe I am not too objective as I am Mexican and I love Mexican food), but if Mexican cuisine is not your favorite, there is no need to worry… you will also find other international cuisine such as Italians, French, Thai, Japanese and American. If you are vegan or vegetarian, you will also find some options for you.

  •

  • GO PARTY

Playa del Carmen has a very wide variety of nightclubs and bars. So, go and have some fun!

  •

  • RENT A CAR AND EXPLORE

The highway is basically a straight line… very easy and safe to drive.  You can rent a car and explore many towns in one single day! I will write about suggested daytrips in future posts. Bare with me. In the meantimehere are some suggestions: go to Valladolid, Holbox, Isla Mujeres, Akumal (swim with the turtles!), spend the day in Tulum, take your dogs to swim to Puerto Morelos beach, go to an isolated beach.

  •

  • GET MARRIED

Yes! Riviera Maya is a very popular wedding destination… and by the way, I know the best photographers in town.

  •

  • RELAX!

Leave your worries behind. Pamper yourself with a massage, take a yoga class, meditate, read a good book while enjoying the ocean breeze.

  •

  • VOLUNTEER

Give back! Many of my guests are amazing people who simply come here to “give back”. They come and help different charities. Some of the most popular ones are: THE KISS PROJECT (it is an organization in Playa del Carmen that provides school supplies and scholarships to underprivileged students) and COCOS ANIMAL WELFARE.

  •

  • TAKE SPANISH LESSONS

There are many Spanish schools in the area. You can hire a private teacher and learn in the comfort of your home, or from a coffee place or you can pay to go to a school.

  •

  • TAKE COOKING LESSONS

Learn to cook some traditional Mexican dishes (and after you do, please feel free to share me the recipes as I am the worst cook ever!) hahaha.

  •

  • MOVE HERE…

    Why not? hehehe

These are some of the activities I can think of from the top of my head, I hope you find this information useful!

Remember, this is only my 2nd post, so any feedback is always welcome! My intention is to share information that will be useful to anyone who is planning to come to visit or to move full time to either Playa del Carmen or another part in the Riviera Maya.

Finally, remember, if you are looking for accommodation, feel free to contact me. I will be more than happy to help you find a vacationrental in Playa del Carmen that matches your criteria and budget.

Virtual hugs!
